Cordless Phone?
The instructions for my brand new cordless phone tell me that I should leave it on charge for at least 24 hours before using it for the very first time. However I have noticed that the battery charge icon showed that it was fully charged after about 5 hours. Should I be able to use it, now that it shows a full charge, without damaging it or shortening the batteries’ life or something? Or is the initial “reading” on such phones not to be believed.?
Nickel-based batteries (as used in 90% of all cordless phones) need to be conditioned before their full capacity becomes available. This normally is two full charge/discharge cycles.
This process forms the anode of the battery properly.

no leave it on trust me
leave it for 24 hours
let it completely drain out over a few days (you can use it)
then recharge it when ever it needs a charge

If it came with NiCad batteries, leave it as instructed. If it came with metal hydride, it’s OK to use once it is fully charged. I would replace NiCad with metal hydride when possible.

Trust me…the phones manual is not telling you to let it charge for 24hrs for nothing. Let it charge that long for the first intial charge. This will give the battery a long life.
